Welcome to the Course!
Welcome to Hunting & Gathering 101: Survival Skills for New Online Teachers.
It’s great to have you here.
Teaching online for the first time is pretty daunting.
So if you’re more than a little nervous, don’t worry – that’s normal!
I can clearly remember my first few weeks in e-learning territory.
I had almost 200 students enrolled in several subjects I’d never taught before.
And yes, I’d heard of Blackboard, the Learning Management System I’d apparently be using.
But I had no idea how it worked!
I admit it: beneath my can-do attitude and confident smile, I was frankly terrified.
I felt like I was suddenly living in caveman times.
Now it was all about survival.
With a grunt of fear and a tug on my saber tooth tiger-skin loincloth, I realized it was make or break time.
So I set out to learn how to find a dry cave, start a fire, and find the berries that were safe to eat.
It wasn’t easy, but I did it.
I survived that first semester – just!
Now, 10 years later, I’m helping other people do the same.
Your own journey doesn’t have to be so traumatic.
You’re about to get a crash course in online teaching survival skills.
Before you know it, you’ll be sitting by a roaring fire, feasting on a haunch of woolly mammoth.
Let’s get started, shall we?
